Migration checklist

A step-by-step plan for moving a whole site, in the order that avoids the usual mistakes.

A sensible order for moving a real site off Elementor. Work through it top to bottom and you will steer clear of the usual mistakes.

Before you convert anything

  • Back up the site (files and database), or work on a staging copy. Your Elementor pages are not deleted, but a backup covers you against anything unrelated going wrong.
  • Update WordPress and your plugins so you are testing against current versions.
  • Find your Elementor page width. In Elementor, open Site Settings → Layout and note the Content Width (often 1140 or 1200).
  • List your most important pages (home, contact, main landing pages). These go first.

Set the plugin up

  • Install and activate the plugin. See Getting Started.
  • Set Section content width to match Elementor.
  • Choose whether to copy metadata and the featured image (usually yes).
  • Turn on Conversion logging so you get a report after each page.
  • Add your Anthropic API key if you plan to use AI Enhancement. Skip this otherwise.

Convert one page first

  • Open the Conversion Wizard.
  • Pick a single page, ideally something middling rather than your most complicated layout.
  • Run the conversion.
  • Open the converted page in the block editor, and open the original in another tab so you can compare them.
  • Check the Conversion Log for anything marked unsupported or empty.
  • Fix flagged items by hand, or run an AI Enhancement pass.

Roll it out

  • Convert the rest in small batches, five to ten at a time, reviewing each batch before the next.
  • For each page you are happy with, either point your menus and internal links at the new page, or copy the converted blocks into the original page so the URL stays the same.
  • Leave the old Elementor pages in place until the whole site is done.

Once everything is converted

  • Click through the whole site on desktop and on a phone. Check headers, footers, forms, and the checkout if you run a store.
  • Send yourself a test through each contact form.
  • Run a speed test to see the difference.
  • When you are sure, deactivate Elementor, then test the site again.
  • Optionally, clear out leftover Elementor data and any pages you no longer need.

A few rules worth keeping

  1. Do not convert on a live site without a backup.
  2. Review every page before you rely on it.
  3. Keep Elementor active until the whole migration checks out, then turn it off.
  4. Small batches beat one big blind run. Catching a problem on page three is a lot easier than finding it on page two hundred.
